On Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio lambasted Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan of Kogi central for speaking to the microphone without recognition during the plenary, emphasizing that the chamber was not a nightclub.
The debate centered on the National Road Transportation Council (Establishment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Deputy Senate Leader Senator Oyelola Ashiru (APC Kwara South).
The bill was opposed by Senator Oshiomhole (APC Edo North) and Senator Victor Umeh.
Senator Oshiomhole argued that establishing the Council would duplicate the functions of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Vehicles Inspection Office (VIO).
During the voice vote on the bill, opinions were divided, with numerous senators calling ‘aye’ and others responding ‘nay.’ Amidst the debate, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan interjected without Akpabio’s prior acknowledgment, suggesting modifications to the bill rather than rejecting it outright.
Akpabio responded, “Distinguished Senator Natasha, you must be recognized before speaking. We are not in a nightclub.” To which Senator Natasha replied, “Oh, pardon me.”
Following the exchange, the debate proceeded, and the bill was ultimately rejected by the Senate.
