Supreme Court Dismisses Osun Govt Suit on Withheld LG Allocations

The Supreme Court has, in a split decision of six to one, struck out a suit filed by the Attorney General of Osun State against the Attorney General of the Federation over the dispute surrounding withheld allocations meant for the state’s 30 local government areas.

In its judgment, the apex court ruled that the Osun Attorney General lacked the legal standing to initiate the action on behalf of the local governments, noting that the constitution does not empower a state attorney general to litigate on issues exclusively pertaining to local government councils.

The decision effectively ends the state government’s bid to compel the release of the funds through the suit.
