Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore arrived at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters on Wednesday with a travel bag containing personal items, including clothes, books, toothpaste and soap, in response to a summons from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit.
The police invited Sowore for questioning in a letter dated August 5, following a petition that accused him of forgery and criminal defamation.
Prior to his appearance, Sowore had announced that he would comply with the summons and had encouraged fellow activists and citizens to accompany him to the facility in a show of solidarity.
Accompanied by his lawyers, A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar, as well as a group of supporters chanting anti-government slogans and criticizing Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, Sowore arrived at the facility around 12:16 p.m.
His symbolic travel bag implied that he was prepared for potential detention.
