A teacher at Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos, Stella Nwadigo, has been suspended after a viral video showed her physically assaulting three-year-old Abayomi Michael during a numeracy lesson, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The teacher’s indefinite suspension comes after a public outcry over the incident, which was sparked by a video showing the teacher repeatedly slapping a young child who was struggling with a lesson.
The teacher, Nwadigo, was arrested on Wednesday following widespread condemnation of the act. In response, the school issued a statement condemning the teacher’s actions as unacceptable and contrary to their principles.
“The video circulating on social media reveals conduct that is entirely unacceptable and inconsistent with our school’s values,” the statement read. “We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for our students, and such behavior will not be tolerated.”
The management confirmed that the teacher has been suspended indefinitely, pending the outcome of an investigation.
“We have taken immediate action by suspending the teacher involved while a thorough investigation is conducted. This reflects our zero-tolerance approach to any form of misconduct, especially actions that compromise the safety and well-being of our students.”
The school also apologized to the victim’s family, assuring them of their full support during this period.
“To the family of the affected pupil, we extend our sincerest apologies and have reached out to ensure their concerns are addressed,” the statement added.
The school has implemented additional measures to prevent similar incidents, including mandatory training for teachers on positive discipline and child protection protocols, as well as a confidential reporting system for inappropriate behavior.
The management has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect and care, and has pledged to make necessary changes to uphold these values.
