The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has set October 5 for the local government elections.
The announcement was made in a meeting with critical stakeholders by the State Independent Electoral Commission.
The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara had appointed caretaker committees to manage the local government areas after the chairmen loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike tenure expiration.
The ousted chairmen had continued to claim their seats following a six-month tenure extension approved by the Martins Amaewhule-led State Assembly lawmakers.
To prevent violent from both camp loyal to the Governor and FCT Minister, the police have taken over all the 23 local government secretariats in the state, pending the forthcoming judgment from the Court of Appeal.
