The Police Service Commission has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others for various acts of misconduct, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing discipline and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, SavannahNewnow Reports.
The decisions were reached during the commission’s plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu, the commission said the four officers were dismissed after they were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers.
According to the statement, 10 senior officers were reduced in rank as part of the disciplinary measures. The affected officers include three Superintendents of Police who were demoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police reduced to Assistant Superintendent of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police demoted to the rank of Inspector.
The commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest.
Other sanctions imposed include severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five officers, warning letters for three officers and a letter of advice to one officer.
However, the commission exonerated seven officers after investigations found them not culpable of any wrongdoing.
Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, said the board would continue to maintain a zero-tolerance stance against indiscipline in the Nigeria Police Force.
“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers,” Argungu said.
He added that the commission would continue to uphold discipline by ensuring that acts of misconduct attract appropriate sanctions, while also rewarding diligent and outstanding officers through its established reward system.
