PoliticsDeji Adeyanju: ‘If opposition presents Obi, I’ll vote Tinubu
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju says he would vote for President Bola Tinubu if opposition parties choose Peter Obi as their candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
Adeyanju made the comment during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Friday, in response to a question about whether his recent criticism of Obi was intended to discredit the former governor of Anambra.
“God forbid that I support APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu,” Adeyanju stated.
Adeyanju and Obi have been embroiled in a heated dispute in recent weeks, with the feud escalating into a legal battle. Obi’s lawyers have threatened to take Adeyanju to court over allegedly defamatory comments made on social media and in interviews, but Adeyanju has dismissed the threat, saying he is prepared to face Obi in court.
He accused Obi of fueling what he described as a toxic political culture, pointing to the conduct of the “Obidient” movement online.
“We cannot have a man who leads a mob that terrorises people online and cannot tolerate criticism, who calls people all sorts of names. Anybody who cannot support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That is not democracy,” Adeyanju argued.
The activist also raised doubts about Obi’s commitment to democracy, pointing out that the Labour Party leader had not made significant sacrifices for Nigeria’s democratic advancement.
“What sacrifices has he made for democracy? Many of us have put our lives on the line at great personal cost. We must sanitise our polity. We cannot have a country where people who terrorise others online dictate the tone of political discourse,” he said.
Adeyanju revealed that he had consistently supported candidates he deemed credible, reflecting on his voting history.
“In my opinion, I have never voted for a bad candidate. In 1999, I voted for Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2011, I voted for Goodluck Jonathan. In 2015, I voted for Jonathan again, against the so-called lovers of democracy who wanted Muhammadu Buhari,” he recounted.
Adeyanju’s comments are sparking reactions as the 2027 election cycle begins to take form and opposition coalitions consider their choices.
