Police react to death of 14-year-old boy during traffic chase in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has released a statement outlining the events that led to the tragic death of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade during a joint traffic operation with OYTMA in Ibadan.

Following widespread outrage over initial reports of a teenager being fatally shot on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, during a chase involving his father, Odunayo Alade, who allegedly drove against traffic and attempted to evade arrest, new developments have emerged.

The Police Command, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. along the Airport Roundabout, Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road in Egbeda Local Government Area.

According to the police, Mr. Alade, driving a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration FST 639 JJ, ignored lawful instructions from a joint enforcement team and sped off, colliding with two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck.

According to the police, barricades were set up to immobilize the vehicle, but the driver allegedly smashed through them, sparking suspicions of potential criminal activity or abduction. In an attempt to stop the car, a police officer shot at the tires, but unfortunately, the bullet hit the teenager in the back seat instead.

Kehinde was rushed to the University College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, and his body has been taken to the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for an autopsy and preservation.

To calm rising tensions, the Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, deployed tactical and intelligence units to the area. He has also ordered a full-scale investigation to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The officer who fired the gun is in custody and cooperating with the investigation, according to authorities who have pledged transparency and vowed to release the findings publicly.

The police have expressed condolences to the grieving family and assured the public of their commitment to justice and accountability.
