Osimhen hat-trick lifts Nigeria, but playoff battle awaits

Victor Osimhen, the prolific striker of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, put on a breathtaking display, scoring a phenomenal hat-trick that propelled his team to a decisive win over Benin in their recent World Cup qualifying encounter.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face an uncertain path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their convincing win. They missed out on automatic qualification and will now have to compete in the CAF playoffs.

Under the new qualification format, the four best runners-up across the African groups will advance to the playoff stage in November.

The overall winner from that mini-tournament will then progress to the intercontinental playoffs, where they will join five other teams from four continents to battle for the final two World Cup spots.

Osimhen’s brilliant display has reignited hope among Nigerian fans, but the team must maintain momentum and focus as the race for a World Cup ticket intensifies.
