Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is scheduled to appear before the Nigeria Police today for questioning.
This follows a formal invitation issued on August 19, 2024, concerning allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
Accompanied by fellow labour leaders and NLC legal representatives, Ajaero is expected at the IRT Complex, Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction in Abuja at 10 a.m.
The high-profile case has sparked significant concern among national and international civil rights groups, who are worried about the potential impact on workers’ rights and civil liberties in Nigeria.
In response to the police invitation, the NLC has warned of a possible nationwide strike if Ajaero is detained. Comrade Benson Upah, NLC’s head of information and public affairs, has urged the police to handle the situation with utmost legality and responsibility.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP, Upah emphasized that the manner in which the police conduct themselves during the interrogation could either alleviate or heighten tensions between the government and organized labour.
He stated, “Ajaero will appear today; it depends on what the police do. I’m hoping that the police, as a responsible organization, conduct themselves well.”
The outcome of today’s proceedings is anticipated to have significant ramifications for the relationship between the government and the labour movement, as well as for broader civil rights issues in Nigeria.
