The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has distanced itself from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC)’s planned protest over the recent increase in voice call and data plan prices, saying its main concern is the welfare of Nigerian students, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
NANS national vice president, Mu’azu Hina, announced during a press conference in Gombe over the weekend that the student body will not participate in protests that do not directly benefit its members, as stated alongside North-east zonal officials.
“Our priority is to tackle the challenges affecting Nigerian students, such as poor funding of education, inadequate infrastructure and insecurity.
“We cannot participate in a protest whose objectives do not align with the needs of students,” he stated.
Hina expressed concerns that the planned demonstration may not achieve its intended results, and instead urged the government to focus on addressing pressing student issues, particularly the deplorable state of roads in the North-east, such as the Numan-Yola-Gombe Road, which has claimed numerous lives, including students.
“This is a matter of life and death, not a partisan issue. We call on the federal government to take immediate action to repair these roads and ensure the safety of students and other road users,” he stated.
NANS reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement with the government and advocated for better infrastructure, security, and increased funding for education.
