The Senator from Ondo South Senatorial District has voiced opposition to a proposed global tax to fund the Sustainable Development Goals, citing the international system’s anarchic nature and lack of comprehensive framework, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
He argued that such a tax would worsen inequality and poverty, undermining the UN’s goal of eradicating poverty by 2030. Instead, he suggested that environmental polluters compensate Africa to alleviate its debt burden, emphasizing the need for African legislators to take decisive action to secure compensation for climate impacts.
Ibrahim noted that the SDGs face challenges in achieving poverty eradication due to the exclusion of key stakeholders invested in meaningful outcomes.
Additionally, issues such as lack of transparency, trust deficit, multilateralism failure, and insufficient non-state actor support hinder SDG progress. With 2030 approaching, Ibrahim emphasized the urgent need for a review to address the significant shortfall in achieving poverty eradication, the primary SDG goal.
Senator Ibrahim commended President Tinubu for staying committed to the SDGs in his budget proposal at the United Nations Interparliamentary, and urged the United Nations to take a closer look at itself, given the time-sensitive nature of achieving the SDGs.
