Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga Dies at 80 in India
Former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, has died at the age of 80 while receiving treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kerala, India.
According to reports, Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest during his morning walk at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam District, around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the veteran politician had been undergoing therapy at the centre for the past five days. He was said to have been accompanied by his daughter and personal physician throughout his stay.
The hospital further disclosed that his body has been embalmed, while the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi are coordinating the repatriation and other necessary arrangements.
Odinga’s connection with the facility dated back several years. His daughter, Rosemary Odinga, had received treatment at the same hospital in 2017 after losing her sight due to optic nerve damage. Following her recovery in 2019, Odinga publicly expressed profound appreciation to the hospital’s medical team for restoring her vision.
A towering figure in Kenyan politics, Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and represented the Langata Constituency in Parliament from 1992 to 2013. Widely regarded as the face of Kenya’s democratic struggles, he remained a formidable voice in the country’s political landscape and a longtime Leader of the Opposition.
