The Federal Government has paid eight months’ outstanding salary arrears owed to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), averting a planned industrial action by the university workers’ union.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while providing an update on the union’s 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over the unpaid arrears.
The arrears arose from the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government of Nigeria/SSANU Agreement.
The union had threatened to embark on a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action” if the government failed to address its demands within the stipulated 14-day deadline.
With the payment of the outstanding eight months’ salaries, the immediate threat of industrial action by SSANU has been averted, providing relief to workers and stakeholders in the nation’s university system.
