Elon Musk Backs Sowore as Nigerian Government Moves to Suspend X Account
Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering open debate, ensuring that all perspectives on a given argument are represented.
He highlighted that community-driven tools, such as Community Notes, facilitate content moderation in a manner that is both transparent and impartial.
Following reports that Nigeria’s government, via the Department of State Services, requested the suspension of Omoyele Sowore’s account due to posts criticizing President Bola Tinubu, the DSS alleged that Sowore’s comments threatened national security, including a video criticizing Tinubu’s remarks on corruption during a trip to Brazil.
Musk’s response suggests that X corp may defy government pressure, particularly in light of Sowore’s past criticism of the Nigerian government, potentially escalating debates on freedom of speech, digital rights, and state control of the internet in Nigeria.
