The Edo State Government has dethroned three traditional rulers in two local government areas for allegedly violating traditional and legal protocols. SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Umoru Inusa Umoru, the former Aidenogie of South Ibie in Etsako West Local Government Area, was among those affected by the dismissal, which was based on the finding that the Aidenogie stool was not vacant at the time of his appointment, a key violation of traditional protocol.
Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi has been reinstated as the rightful Aidenogie following his earlier dismissal, demonstrating the state’s commitment to upholding due process in traditional institutions.
Lukman Akemokue was also removed as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in Etsako East, according to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Umar Ikhilor, on Wednesday in Benin, for allegedly violating succession laws established under customary declarations.
According to the statement, his removal was allegedly due to non-compliance with the Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979, which governs traditional succession.
Also affected was Dr George Oshiapi Egabor, who was removed as Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, in Etsako East Local Government.
Egabor’s removal came after he was allegedly suspended due to multiple reported incidents of kidnappings and killings within his area.
The Edo Executive Council approved these revocations during its meeting on Tuesday, April 29.
The statement added that preparations were underway to commence the lawful selection process for a new Okuokpellagbe of Okpella and Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom.
The government urged citizens in the affected areas to remain calm while it worked to maintain order, unity, prosperity, and statewide communal harmony.
