Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in which the former minister cited health concerns as the reason for his decision to step down.
According to the Presidency, President Tinubu has accepted Abubakar’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.
The President is expected to communicate his nominee for a new defence minister to the Senate later in the week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023.
He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, as part of President Tinubu’s first federal cabinet.
His departure comes at a time when the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details of the administration’s security strategy expected to be unveiled soon.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
