A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to stop former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, from contesting the 2027 presidential election, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
In its ruling delivered on Tuesday, the court held that the former president remains constitutionally
to seek the nation’s highest office, relying on earlier judgments delivered by the Federal High Court in Yenagoa as well as the Court of Appeal.
The suit, filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, sought an interpretation of constitutional provisions relating to presidential tenure, arguing that Jonathan should not be eligible to contest again after previously serving as president.
However, the court rejected the argument and upheld previous judicial decisions that favoured the former president’s eligibility.
During proceedings leading to the judgment, Jonathan’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Chris Uche, urged the court to dismiss the case, insisting that the matter had already been settled by competent courts.
The judgment is expected to further intensify political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially amid growing speculations about Jonathan’s possible return to active presidential politics.
Jonathan, who first assumed office in 2010 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning a fresh mandate in 2011, served as Nigeria’s president until 2015.
