Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has become the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church after being elected on the second day of voting at the Vatican.
He is the first American to become the Pope at the age of 69.
Prevost, although born in Chicago, has spent a significant portion of his life abroad, particularly in Peru and Rome. Recognized for his diplomatic prowess, he is anticipated to interact effectively with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, despite potential differences in views on issues such as immigration.
The newly elected pope has taken the papal name of Leo XIV.
