The Federal Government has cancelled the traditional military parade for this year’s Democracy Day celebration on Thursday, June 12, 2025, according to the Inter-Ministerial Committee overseeing the Democracy Day programme.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will kick off the day with a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m., where he is expected to discuss the state of the nation and Nigeria’s democratic progress.
The President is scheduled to address a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon, with a focus on Nigeria’s democratic progress, national unity, and institutional reforms.
A public lecture titled ‘Strengthening Democracy Through Lasting Reforms’ will take place at 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where prominent political figures, policymakers, and civil society leaders will reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and challenges.
A presidency source revealed that the cancellation of the parade might be linked to an incident last year where President Tinubu slipped while attempting to board a ceremonial vehicle during the June 12 parade at Eagle Square, Abuja, although no official reason was given. Despite the brief stumble, the President quickly regained his composure and continued with the event.
Officials have reaffirmed that President Tinubu is in good health and remains dedicated to enhancing democratic governance in Nigeria, contrary to speculation.
