Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi, the District Head of Kurfi in Katsina State and holder of the traditional title ‘Maradin Katsina,’ passed away at 93, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Born in 1931, he was a notable figure in Nigeria’s civil service and played a significant role in the country’s electoral history.
Prior to becoming a traditional ruler, Kurfi served in various high-ranking federal positions, including as deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence during the 1966 coup and later as a permanent secretary in the Office of the Head of Service.
Kurfi is most remembered for being the inaugural executive secretary of the now-defunct Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO), which later evolved into the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In this role, he played a pivotal part in Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1979, overseeing the elections that led to Alhaji Shehu Shagari becoming the first executive president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
