Workers of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike, shutting down the company’s operations across its service areas, SavannahNewnow learnt.
The industrial action followed alleged management failures to address the workers’ demands, including non-payment of entitlements, failure to implement minimum wage adjustments, alleged overbilling and unjustified tariff increases.
The strike has reportedly resulted in a widespread power outage across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states, leaving residents and businesses without electricity.
Clarence Jegede reports that the shutdown has affected all BEDC formations across the four states, raising concerns over the impact on households, commercial activities and essential services.
The union is yet to call off the strike, as the dispute between the workers and management remains unresolved.
