Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has denounced the tax reforms proposed by the APC-led Federal Government, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Bala Mohammed cautioned that they could intensify economic difficulties and exacerbate hardships, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the measures.
“It is unfortunate that these tax reforms seem designed to benefit only a section of the country while shortchanging Northern Nigeria,” Governor Bala said. “Policies like this, which breed inequality and hardship, must be revisited. Leadership is about listening to the people and addressing their concerns.”
He emphasized that no government should impose unpopular policies on its citizens, stating, “This is not an oligarchy or military rule. A good leader must be sensitive to the people’s needs and willing to change course when necessary.”
Governor Bala warned against implementing policies that could exacerbate poverty and unrest, emphasizing the need to prioritize Nigeria’s unity and stability.
He urged the Federal Government to adopt inclusive policies that promote national unity by working across party lines to address the challenges faced by Nigerians.
“We voted for this presidency in Bauchi and other states, and they must listen to us. Leadership is not about pride or ego; it’s about doing what will assist the people. The current situation is dire, and it wasn’t this bad before. The Federal Government must address these issues urgently.”
He further warned that continued insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians could lead to unrest. “People are suffering and hungry. If this persists, we will not remain silent. We respect leadership, but we cannot allow anyone to undermine us or the well-being of our people.”
During the Christmas homage, Governor Bala expressed gratitude to the Christian community in Bauchi for their unwavering support throughout his political journey. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring freedom of worship for all residents.
“You have supported me even during difficult times, and I am deeply grateful. We will continue to be just and fair in our governance because this is what leadership demands,” he said.
The governor urged Christians to continue praying for the country and its leaders, acknowledging Nigeria’s challenges.
He emphasized the need for prayers to overcome hunger, insecurity, and other hardships, and to pray for a better future for Nigeria.
Reflecting on calls for him to run for the presidency, Governor Bala expressed contentment with his achievements, but willingness to serve further if it benefits his people.
Reverend Abraham Damina, the Bauchi State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), praised Governor Bala for his inclusive leadership and commitment to fostering unity in the state.
