The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that former Ondo State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh, disclosed to Channels Television that the autopsy report has been concluded, giving investigators clearer direction in the ongoing probe.
According to him, the autopsy conducted on September 11, alongside fresh investigative findings, prompted the re-arrest and continued detention of seven out of the fourteen family members earlier interrogated.
The Command is now awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to determine the appropriate charges.
Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, had previously arrested and questioned nine relatives and aides in connection with the circumstances surrounding the politician’s death.
A key red flag in the case was a suspicious ₦50 million transfer from Akingboye’s bank account, allegedly withdrawn and shared by some immediate family members.
“With the toxicology report now ready, we are awaiting the DPP’s advice so that prosecution can commence against anyone found culpable,” CP Jimoh stated.
Akingboye died under unclear circumstances on September 3, with relatives reporting that his body was found in the backyard of his Lagos residence. His first son, Samuel Akingboye, who lives in Ondo State, alerted authorities and called for a full investigation into the incident.
CP Jimoh reiterated the Command’s commitment to establishing the facts of the case and ensuring that justice is served.
