Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political arena ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was made on Monday through a post on X, where Atiku shared photos of himself receiving his ADC membership card along with a customised “Waziri 01” jersey.
The registration took place in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, drawing a large crowd of supporters, party executives and community leaders.
In the released images, Atiku is seen lifting his membership form as enthusiastic supporters recorded the moment.
“It’s official. – AA,” he posted, finally confirming months of speculation surrounding his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been a central figure for decades.
His move to the ADC comes shortly after insiders hinted he would formalise his membership during his birthday activities in Adamawa, which featured several community outreach engagements.
Atiku had earlier resigned from the PDP in 2025 and is expected to work toward building a strong opposition bloc with the ADC as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
