Aiyedatiwa Opens NBA Law Week, Advocates for Professional Ethics Revival

The Nigerian Bar Association’s Ondo City Branch kicked off its Law Week on Tuesday, with Ondo State Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa urging the legal profession to recommit to upholding ethical standards and the rule of law.

The Governor, represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, characterized the event as a testament to the state’s dedication to upholding justice, integrity, and the rule of law.

The Governor discussed the theme ‘Dying Ember of Professional Ethics: The Blunted Sword of the Gatekeeper’ and called on legal practitioners to address the ethical challenges facing their profession and strive to restore public confidence in the legal system.

He stressed that trust is the cornerstone of the legal profession, and urged lawyers to maintain public confidence by upholding exemplary ethical conduct, emphasizing their responsibility as guardians of justice to revive the highest ethical standards.

On personal note, Dr. Ajulo expressed gratitude to the Governor for his unwavering support of lawyers in the state and nationwide, noting that the Governor’s absence was due to urgent state matters that required his attention.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa is a leader who values lawyers and the rule of law, and he appreciates their support, particularly during his challenging political times. He has asked me to express his gratitude and assure you of his continued commitment to promoting the welfare of the legal profession and advancing justice in our state.”

The event was attended by several distinguished personalities, including former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; the Lisa of Ondo, representing the Osemawe, Oba Dr. Adesimbo Victor Ademefun Kiladejo, Jilo III; Prof. Laolu Yusuf Ali, SAN; Aare Muyiwa Akinboro; Hon. Justice Adwogbehingbe of the Court of Appeal; the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Kuteyi; as well as Hon. Justice Sunday Olorundahunsi and Hon. Justice F.S. Akinbinu, among other eminent jurists, traditional leaders, and senior members of the Bar.
