The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate has been released under the recent exercise of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Fagbemi explained that the process is still at the final administrative review stage and has not yet reached the point of implementation.
According to him, the review is a standard procedure meant to ensure that all names and recommendations comply strictly with legal and procedural requirements before any release instrument is issued.
“The last stage of the exercise, after approval by the Council of State, is the issuance of the instrument for implementation of the decision concerning each beneficiary,” the statement read. “This stage allows for a final review of the list for any necessary corrections before forwarding it to the Controller-General of Corrections for action.”
Fagbemi emphasized that the verification process reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process.
He also commended Nigerians for their vigilance and constructive feedback, saying such public engagement strengthens institutional integrity and demonstrates genuine concern for justice and good governance.
“There is no delay in the process,” the AGF stated. “It is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy. The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
He assured that once all legal and procedural checks are completed, the public will be duly informed of the next steps.
