AFCON 2023: Super Eagles fly over Guinea-Bissau, qualify for round of 16

Super Eagles put their ambition of lifting fourth African Cup of Nations trophy on course beating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in the last match of Group A at the ongoing AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

The lone goal was enough to land Nigeria in the round of 16 of the competition which held at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on Monday.

The pressure mounted on the Guineans in the first half of the pulsating encounter paid off on 36th minutes when Sangante of scored an owned goal to fetch Nigeria the maximum point and thus finished the group stage behind Equatorial Giunea.

Last year, The Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau shocked the Super Eagles with 1-0 win at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja on game week four of the AFCON qualifying series and were hoping for a repeat but met stronger Eagles who were poised to paid them back in their own coin.

Jose Peseiro fielded a line-up that saw Kenneth Omeruo coming in for Ekong to captain the Nigerian side as well as Joe Aribo replacing Everton’s Alex Iwobi, while Alhassan Yusuf was still sidelined with an injury.

Osimhen would have a chance to double Nigeria;s lead in the latter stages of the first half but Osimhen couln’t quite make contact to cross from Simon.

The second half resumed with Simon missing a glorious chance to make it two as Mendes stretched out an arm to claims the ball.

Osimhen felt he had gotten his goal in the 62nd-minute but the VAR would later rule him offside.
