Stephen Abuwatseya, a driver for a ride-hailing service, has publicly apologized to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South in Abia State, following a dispute in Abuja over a package delivery, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Abuwatseya expressed remorse for his actions that escalated the situation and apologized not only to Ikwechegh but also to the Nigerian public.
He has requested that the issue be resolved, stating, ‘Good day, Nigerians. I am Stephen Abuwatseya. Recently, I disagreed with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh. I wish to apologize for any words or actions that may have provoked his anger.’
“I want to tell Nigerians that it’s not time for us to start dividing ourselves based on religion, tribes, or regions. We should come together, see how we can unite this nation, and move it forward.
“Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and forget, as it’s even contained in our Lord’s Prayer, that ‘Lord, please forgive us, as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ For there is no justice without forgiveness. Thank you very much.”
The driver extended his appreciation to his family and supporters, stating, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my family, including my parents, brothers, uncles, and everyone who has supported me. I am thankful to all of you and I love you all. Thank you. May God bless Nigeria.”
Previously, Ikwechegh was granted bail for N500,000 following his appearance at the Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja.
A video showing Ikwechegh allegedly assaulting Abuwatseya was presented as evidence, leading to charges brought by the Inspector-General of Police. During the hearing, presided over by Abubakar Umar Sai’id, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office, assault, and making threats.
His lawyer successfully requested bail, which was set at N500,000 with the requirement of two sureties living within the court’s jurisdiction. The trial has been postponed to November 8.
