The Ondo State Government has announced a ban on the movement of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, around the Government House axis in Alagbaka, Akure, as part of measures to improve traffic flow and ensure better order within the state capital, SavannahNewnow Reports.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Muyiwa Ogunyemi, announced the restriction on Tuesday during a media chat with journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure.
Ogunyemi explained that Okada riders would only be permitted to operate up to the Police Officers’ Mess axis, while another designated route would take them through First Bank, Alagbaka, terminating around the Teaching Service Commission area.
He also directed all tricycle and motorcycle operators currently using the Post Office axis to relocate in line with the new traffic arrangement.
The Special Adviser warned that motorists and other road users who violate traffic lights would be arrested and prosecuted without delay.
He further announced a ban on indiscriminate parking and the display or sale of goods on roads, stressing that such activities contribute significantly to traffic congestion and obstruct the free movement of vehicles.
Ogunyemi appealed to residents, motorists, traders and other road users to cooperate with the government, saying the measures were aimed at improving traffic management and making Akure a more orderly and accessible state capital.
He disclosed that the government would also erect zebra crossings and introduce speed-limit signs, particularly around areas with schools and other locations considered prone to vehicular accidents.
The Special Adviser urged drivers, Okada riders, tricycle operators and pedestrians to pay attention to road signs and comply strictly with traffic regulations, warning that offenders would face the consequences of violating the new directives.
