The Ondo State House of Assembly is once again engulfed in a leadership crisis, with lawmakers reportedly intensifying moves to impeach the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, SavannahNewnow Reports.
According to a report by New Telegraph, the development is part of a prolonged dispute within the 26-member Assembly over allegations of financial misconduct and the handling of funds linked to the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
The impeachment move was initially backed by 21 lawmakers, who accused Oladiji of alleged financial impropriety involving about N44 million said to have been released for the reordering of the OSOPADEC 2026 budget. The lawmakers also alleged that the Speaker acted without adequately consulting members of the House.
The Speaker has consistently denied the allegations, describing the impeachment effort as politically motivated. Oladiji has also alleged that some lawmakers opposed to his leadership are seeking to prevent his return as Speaker after the 2027 elections.
The crisis had earlier been put on hold following interventions by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with lawmakers agreeing to await the outcome of reconciliation efforts.
However, reports indicate that the impeachment issue remains unresolved, with the Speaker’s fate still hanging in the balance as efforts to resolve the internal disagreement continue.
The unfolding development has further deepened concerns over the stability of the Ondo State legislature and its ability to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities amid the leadership dispute.
