The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has officially announced Frederick Agbedi as the new Minority Leader of the 10th House of Representatives, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The announcement brings an end to days of intense lobbying, political consultations and disagreements among opposition lawmakers over who should occupy the position.
Agbedi, a ranking lawmaker from Bayelsa State representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), takes over the leadership of the opposition caucus in the Green Chamber following the resignation of Kingsley Chinda.
The contest for the minority leadership had generated significant tension within the House, with several opposition lawmakers insisting that the position should be filled in accordance with parliamentary conventions and House rules.
Earlier on Thursday, opposition members staged a protest and demanded announcement of the minority leader before legislative proceedings could continue.
Agbedi’s emergence is expected to strengthen the opposition’s coordination in the House as lawmakers prepare to engage the ruling party on key national issues and pending legislative matters.
His appointment also reflects the influence of senior-ranking lawmakers within the opposition caucus and is seen as a move aimed at restoring stability within the minority leadership structure.
