The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis, the individual accused of creating and circulating an AI-generated voice recording that was falsely presented online as a leaked conversation involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The development was disclosed on Thursday by the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through a post on his official X handle.
According to Onanuga, the suspect was apprehended by a special crack team operating under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following investigations into the controversial audio clip.
“The IGP crack team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who originated the fake voice that he passed on to his gullible targets as President Tinubu’s voice,” Onanuga stated.
The arrest comes after days of widespread public debate and online discussions sparked by the circulation of the audio recording, which many social media users initially believed to be an authentic voice note from President Tinubu.
The controversy gained momentum on May 27, 2026, when a video involving social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, went viral across multiple social media platforms.
The video drew attention to the alleged leaked recording, triggering intense reactions from Nigerians and raising concerns about the growing misuse of artificial intelligence technology to create misleading content.
Authorities have yet to disclose the specific charges that may be filed against the suspect. However, the arrest underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the spread of fake news, digital misinformation, and the malicious use of AI-generated content capable of misleading the public and undermining national security.
The police are expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
