The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt Debo Ogundoyin has revealed that the terrorists responsible for the abduction of schoolchildren and other victims in the state are demanding weapons, large sums of money and far reaching concessions, including influence over future laws in Nigeria, as conditions for the release of those held captive.
The shocking disclosure comes amid growing concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the country and the increasing boldness of criminal groups operating across several states.
According to the Speaker, negotiations and intelligence reports indicate that the kidnappers have made demands that go beyond the usual requests for ransom payments. He disclosed that the group is insisting on the supply of sophisticated weapons, financial compensation, and guarantees that certain laws and policies in the future would be tailored to accommodate their interests.
The Speaker described the demands as outrageous and a direct challenge to Nigeria’s sovereignty, stressing that no responsible government would surrender its authority or constitutional powers to criminal elements.
He noted that the abducted victims, including schoolchildren and other residents, remain a source of concern for the state government, their families and the wider public.
He assured that security agencies are working tirelessly to secure their safe release while exploring every lawful means to address the situation.
The lawmaker called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry across the country. He warned that granting such demands would set a dangerous precedent and embolden other criminal groups to make similar requests.
He further urged Nigerians to support ongoing security operations and provide useful information that could assist authorities in tracking down those responsible for the abductions.
