Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Lawal, in a statement, alleged that the ADC presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Atiku, claiming that the outcome had been predetermined to ensure the former vice president secured the party’s ticket.
The former SGF said he could not remain in a party where, according to him, democratic principles were compromised. He further declared that he would not be part of what he described as Atiku’s “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Lawal also argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be a better leader than Atiku, despite being a critic of the current administration on several occasions.
In his criticism of the ADC flagbearer, Lawal described Atiku as incompetent and accused him of promoting divisive politics along ethnic and religious lines. He maintained that such qualities, in his view, make the former vice president unfit to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office.
The development is expected to generate fresh debate within opposition circles as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
