President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the official postings of 65 ambassadors-designate to Nigeria’s foreign missions and the United Nations, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s diplomatic presence across the world, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The approval covers 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors, whose nominations were earlier confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the ambassadors have now been assigned to various strategic missions across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East.
Among the prominent non-career nominees, former presidential aide Reno Omokri has been posted to Mexico, while former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s former rival and ex-minister Femi Fani-Kayode is to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany. Former Minister of Health Isaac Folorunso Adewole has been posted to Canada, while business magnate and senator Jimoh Ibrahim will serve as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Other notable appointments include former Chief of Air Staff Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, who will head Nigeria’s mission in the Philippines, and former Inspector-General of Police Lateef Kayode Are, who has been assigned to the United States.
In the career ambassador category, seasoned diplomats were posted to key global capitals including Egypt, India, Belgium, Morocco, Malaysia, Iran, and Switzerland.
The statement also disclosed that the United Kingdom has already granted agrément for Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu as Nigeria’s High Commissioner, while France has approved the appointment of Ambassador Ayodele Oke.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally transmitted the nominations of the remaining envoys to their respective host countries and requested agrément in line with established diplomatic procedures.
President Tinubu further directed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria to immediately commence the induction programme for all ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners ahead of their deployment to their respective missions.
