Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is reportedly preparing to submit a new list of commissioner nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, signaling a possible breakthrough in the lingering political crisis that has gripped the state, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
This move follows renewed reconciliation efforts spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the rift between Governor Fubara and his estranged political ally, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Credible sources disclosed that a high-level, closed-door meeting was held late Sunday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with President Tinubu, Governor Fubara, Minister Wike, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and respected elders from the state in attendance.
The talks reportedly centered on ending the prolonged power tussle that has hampered governance in Rivers State and posed a serious threat to Governor Fubara’s administration.
Insiders revealed that President Tinubu expressed concern over the governor’s management of the crisis and presented him with key options aimed at preserving political stability and forestalling any impeachment move.
Central to the resolution is the comprehensive implementation of a previous peace agreement brokered in late 2023. Under the fresh arrangement, Governor Fubara is expected to either reinstate commissioners aligned with Minister Wike or submit a new, mutually agreed list of nominees for confirmation by the House of Assembly.
Sources further indicated that, following the Abuja meeting, Governor Fubara paid a private visit to Minister Wike at his Guzape residence, where he reportedly offered an apology as part of the reconciliation process.
Although President Tinubu was said to be dissatisfied with how the crisis was initially handled, he reportedly advised against any attempt to impeach the governor, urging all parties to embrace dialogue, compromise, and political restraint in the interest of Rivers State.
