The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed a five-match suspension to Senegal head coach, Pape Thiaw, following his role in the heated scenes that marred the aftermath of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
In a statement released by CAF, the disciplinary committee found the Senegalese coach culpable for misconduct and unsporting behavior during and after the explosive final, which descended into chaos amid protests over officiating decisions. The incident reportedly involved confrontations with match officials and CAF personnel, actions deemed to have violated the competition’s disciplinary code.
As part of the sanctions, Thiaw will be barred from the technical area for Senegal’s next five competitive matches under CAF jurisdiction. He is also expected to pay a fine, although CAF did not immediately disclose the exact amount.
The AFCON final, which attracted massive continental and global attention, was overshadowed by post-match disorder as tensions boiled over on the touchline. CAF described the behavior displayed as “unacceptable” and emphasized that the punishment was intended to preserve discipline, respect for officials, and the integrity of African football.
Senegal’s football federation is yet to issue an official response, but sources suggest the body may consider lodging an appeal within the stipulated timeframe. If the ban stands, Senegal will be forced to navigate crucial upcoming fixtures without their head coach on the sidelines.
CAF reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, warning that coaches, players, and officials must uphold professionalism, especially on football’s biggest stages.
