The Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to proceed with impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor of the state, escalating the ongoing political crisis in Rivers, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The decision was reached during a press briefing by the Assembly on Friday. Lawmakers argued that the process is in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and necessary to uphold accountability and the rule of law.
The Assembly leadership maintained that the action is not driven by personal or political vendetta but by what it described as persistent governance failures and disregard for legislative authority. “No individual is above the law, and the Assembly has a constitutional duty to act where necessary,” a senior lawmaker said.
