The first son and eldest child of late Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), a prominent businessman and 2023 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, Mr. Samuel Akingboye, has raised serious concerns over what he described as “suspicious and violent circumstances” surrounding his father’s death, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
In a detailed statement released to the press on Thursday, Akingboye recounted the series of troubling events that have unfolded since his father’s passing on September 3, 2025, alleging foul play, obstruction of investigation, and possible tampering with his late father’s assets.
Circumstances of Death
According to Samuel, he was alerted early that morning through his security aide that his father had been reported dead, information he received from his stepbrother, Melvin. However, upon arriving at the hospital, he said the physical state of his father’s body contradicted the story told by family members present at the time.
He alleged that his requests for clarity from his stepmother and stepbrothers yielded “inconsistent and incoherent responses,” prompting him to demand a full autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.
Suspicious Financial and Property Movements
Barely hours after the announcement of his father’s death, Akingboye claimed he received credible information that “a very large sum of money” had been moved from his father’s company account into accounts linked to his stepmother and her son.
He also alleged that personal valuables, vital documents, and cash were removed from his late father’s residence and office while he was still attending to hospital formalities.
Police Involvement and Investigation Hurdles
The late politician’s son explained that following a formal complaint, police investigations began at the Ajah Division before the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, due to its sensitive nature.
He said officers of the Homicide Unit and forensic experts later visited the scene, recovered CCTV footage from a nearby residence, and conducted an autopsy in the presence of representatives from both sides of the family.
However, he claimed that the CCTV footage contradicted earlier accounts provided by those in the house, raising more questions about what transpired on the night of his father’s death.
Akingboye further alleged that when police attempted to revisit the residence for further investigation, they were initially resisted and denied access by his stepmother and her children.
Concerns Over Police Handling
Samuel expressed frustration at what he described as the Lagos State Police Command’s “lack of transparency and possible bias.”
He alleged that the Commissioner of Police (CP) refused to communicate the autopsy result to him, despite being the complainant, and later transferred the case from the SCID to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere a move he said was “illogical and suspicious.”
According to him, despite repeated promises of updates within a week, several weeks have now passed without any official briefing or release of the autopsy report. He also noted that a formal request by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the case file has gone unanswered by the police.
Threats and Asset Concerns
Akingboye further alleged receiving “direct and indirect death threats” from his stepmother and her relatives for insisting on a full investigation.
He warned the public against transacting or purchasing any of his late father’s assets or properties, stressing that any such actions would be “at the buyer’s peril” until investigations are concluded.
Calls for Intervention
The grieving son called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take over the investigation and ensure transparency by:
Releasing the autopsy and CCTV findings,
Explaining repeated case reassignments,
Responding to the DPP’s requests, and
Ensuring the integrity of the investigation process.
He also appealed to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, civil society groups, and human rights organizations to intervene and help ensure justice is served.
Emotional Appeal
In his concluding remarks, Akingboye said his father “was not just a public figure but a human being, a patriot, and a provider,” insisting that justice must be done.
“I speak today not in malice, but in grief, responsibility, and the pursuit of justice,” he stated. “No matter how long it takes, I will stand firm until justice prevails.”
