Tension in Ibadan as Secondary School Students Clash Violently
Panic gripped parts of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday as students from three secondary schools reportedly engaged in a violent confrontation, brandishing swords and other dangerous weapons.
Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of teenage boys charging at one another in what eyewitnesses described as a full-scale street battle. The sudden outbreak of violence threw residents and shop owners into confusion as people scampered for safety.
Residents likened the incident to a gang war rather than an ordinary school fight, expressing deep concern over the alarming rise of violent behavior among youths in the city.
Some observers attributed the development to early exposure to political thuggery and cultism, noting that several of Ibadan’s notorious gang figures including the late Ekugbemi, Ebila, and Ege were believed to have started from similar school-related clashes before joining organized street gangs.
Elderly residents lamented that while inter-school rivalries have long existed in Ibadan, recent clashes have taken a more dangerous turn due to the increasing use of weapons.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have not released an official statement regarding the incident, though investigations are said to be ongoing.
