The Nigerian Senate has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to democratic principles, assuring the United Nations and the global community that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not engage in any act that could delegitimise opposition voices in the country’s political space, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District, made this known while addressing participants at the ongoing Global Parliamentary Conference on Counter-Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism, holding in Istanbul, Turkey.
In his address, Senator Ibrahim emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy has matured over the years, and the current administration under President Tinubu fully recognizes the critical role of opposition parties in strengthening governance, accountability, and national stability.
He stated that the Senate, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, remains committed to fostering a political environment where divergent opinions are respected, and constructive criticism is encouraged as part of democratic growth.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will never delegitimise the opposition. Rather, it welcomes alternative viewpoints as vital contributions to nation-building,” Senator Ibrahim said. “The government’s focus is on inclusive governance, peacebuilding, and the consolidation of democratic institutions.”
The lawmaker further highlighted Nigeria’s collaborative efforts with international partners in combating terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that the government’s approach combines security measures with socioeconomic interventions to address root causes.
He urged the global community to support African nations, particularly Nigeria, in strengthening democratic resilience and building institutions capable of countering threats to peace and development.
The conference, which attracted parliamentarians and policymakers from across the world, is aimed at deepening legislative engagement in counter-terrorism strategies and promoting democratic responses to violent extremism.
