The Lagos State Police Command has ordered a forensic probe into the death of Bamidele Akingboye, a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the November 2024 Ondo State election.
Akingboye reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday, September 3, at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, under circumstances described as controversial.
Confirming the development, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi, said Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to discreetly investigate the case.
A team of detectives, alongside the Crime Scene Investigation unit, was dispatched to the residence, which was cordoned off for evidence gathering and forensic analysis.
During the police visit, the late politician’s son, Samuel Akingboye, told Channels Television that he pushed for the probe to unravel the mystery surrounding his father’s death.
“I saw him the day before, so it is very shocking. That is why I opened the case — I wasn’t getting any explanation. I just want to do the best by him and know how he died. There has to be an explanation.”
His daughter, Michaella Akingboye, also appealed to the public to dismiss unverified social media claims, adding that the family trusts the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
