INEC Chairman Yakubu Mahmood has announced that inmates of the Nigeria Correctional Service will be allowed to vote in Nigerian elections.
Mahmood made this statement while hosting the Comptroller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Mahmood endorsed the Appeal Court’s ruling granting inmates the right to register and vote in elections during his visit.
He added that the commission has been working with NCoS to establish procedures for accommodating inmates during elections.
He mentioned that these concerns include access to voting facilities, the concerns of political parties, and the category of inmates who will benefit from the Appeal Court’s judgment.
He also urged lawmakers to intervene and stated that INEC will adhere to the law regarding this matter.
In his response, Nwakuche said the judgement of the court upholds the right of inmates especially those who are awaiting trial.
