Demonstrators have assembled at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, calling for the release of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
The protesters, mostly clad in black, waved the national flag and sang anti-government songs, urging the police to free Sowore.
Additionally, they alleged that an unnamed Assistant Commissioner of Police had intimidated them, while also denying allegations that they had blocked roads.
“We are exercising our fundamental constitutional rights,” one of the protesters told journalists in the early hours of the day.
“We did not block any road, an Assistant Commissioner of Police is here to intimidate us. He came alongside a dog to attack us. We are here within the ambit of the law, let it be on record.”
On Wednesday afternoon, Sowore arrived at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, accompanied by his supporters, following an invitation from the police.
The Nigeria Police Force, specifically the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit, is investigating him for alleged forgery and inciting disturbance.
By Thursday, however, reports revealed that Sowore was being detained and had yet to be released, prompting widespread outrage across the nation.
The police also faced criticism for allegedly fracturing Sowore’s hand while attempting to forcibly transport him from custody to court on Thursday.
