Ondo State deserves a special place in the national reckoning for its exceptional role in the June 12 democratic struggle, according to Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.
Ajulo stressed, during an interview at the 2025 Democracy Day commemoration lecture, that the state was home to some of the most prominent voices and courageous actors in Nigeria’s historic fight for democracy, particularly in the June 12 struggle.
He said, “Ondo State was not just represented, it was deeply entrenched in the movement. Our people, across political, legal, and civil society spheres, stood firm at great personal cost to ensure the return of democratic governance. In my opinion and personal capacity as someone who was a student leader and actively participated in the pro-democracy movement, the sacrifices and contributions of the people of Ondo State remain profound and historically significant.”
Dr. Ajulo, who was part of the struggle as a student leader, also highlighted key figures such as the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a human rights lawyer and activist; Pa Reuben Fasoranti, an elder statesman and NADECO chieftain; Basorun Sehinde Arogbofa, a respected Afenifere leader; and the late Governor Adekunle Ajasin, among others.

He noted that prominent legal figures like Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN; Mr. Femi Falana, SAN; Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; and former Governor Kayode Fayemi, who had strong ties to Ondo at the time, were vocal advocates for democratic principles and the rule of law during the struggle.
Dr. Ajulo stressed that Ondo State has long been a hub for progressive politics, tracing back to the era of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the 1950s, when the state adopted forward-thinking policies on education, healthcare, and governance under the progressive ideology banner.
Dr. Ajulo further said “As the nation celebrates June 12 and honours its heroes, it is important that the legacy and contribution of Ondo State be recognized and remembered. Our people paid the price for the freedom we all now enjoy.”
He emphasised the importance of democratic principles, noting that power resides with the people and their voices are crucial in a democratic system. He added, ‘The Ondo State government, led by Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, acknowledges this and has been responsive to the people’s needs and aspirations. The state respects opposing viewpoints expressed within the bounds of the law.’
