Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, emphasizing that no individual in Abuja is above the law, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Wike made the statement on Thursday during the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Speaking to a gathering of students, academics, and stakeholders, the former governor of Rivers State stated that his leadership in the FCT over the past two years has been characterized by a strict adherence to constitutional provisions and established regulations.
The minister, while delivering a lecture titled ‘Nigeria of Our Dreams’, emphasized that leadership demands the courage to make bold decisions for the greater good, rather than seeking popularity or sentiment.
He stated that low-income individuals do not own homes in the FCT, and that affluent areas such as Maitama, Asokoro, and the Central Business District are inhabited by the wealthy, adding that some of them feel they are above the law, but a good leader must take tough decisions, which is what has been done, making Abuja a true federal capital territory.
He continued: “Leadership is not a popularity contest; it’s about courage and the ability to make tough decisions. President Bola Tinubu is one such leader—bold and decisive.”
“I’m not the first FCT Minister, but I’ve made it clear that no one is exempt. Mention one poor person who owns property in Maitama—none. They are all wealthy individuals who don’t want to pay taxes. Well, they must pay. If they don’t, I will touch them, and heaven will not fall—in fact, it will be at peace.”
Wike stated that his appointment was not for show, but to ensure effective governance and enforce compliance, regardless of an individual’s status or influence.
