The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has taken a Former House of Representatives member, Gudaji Kazaure into custody for allegedly receiving N70 million from Godwin Emefiele, the disgraced former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Savannah Newsnow learnt Operatives of the anti-graft commission whisked away Kazaure, Gwiwa and Yan Kwashi constituencies in Jigawa state on Wednesday, after a High Court in Kano lifted a restraining order against him.
Kazaure reportedly received N20 million in two installments for ‘Sallah Rams’ from Emefiele’s emissary, Eric, and an additional N50 million as a ‘donation’ after a fire at his residence.
The former lawmaker is being held at the commission’s Kano office and may be taken to Abuja to face charges.
In December 2022, Kazaure alleged that Emefiele was involved in the misappropriation of N89 trillion in stamp duty collections, claiming a presidential committee he served on as secretary had investigated the funds and had the authority to detain those implicated, including Emefiele.
The presidency denied these allegations, stating that the committee was unauthorized and had been disbanded.
Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu also disputed the claim, pointing out that Nigeria’s banking sector did not have N50 trillion in assets, making the alleged N89 trillion fraud highly unlikely.
