Top Peoples Democratic Party members, including governors elected on the PDP platform, have agreed not to join any coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election and will instead focus on rebuilding and strengthening the party.
The decision was made during a crucial overnight meeting in Abuja, where party leaders unanimously agreed to focus on revitalizing the PDP rather than pursuing new political alliances.
The meeting follows hints by former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of a possible coalition of opposition forces to defeat the All Progressives Congress in 2027.
Prominent party figures in attendance included former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, former governors Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna, Sule Lamido of Jigawa, and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, as well as former Minister of Police Affairs Adamu Maina Waziri and former Defence Minister Lawal Batagarawa.
Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, representing the PDP Governors’ Forum, attended the meeting, which was characterized by a frank and purposeful atmosphere with a shared determination to strengthen the party from within.
“They resolved that there’s no need to abandon the PDP or work on any coalition,” the source told Daily Sun.
“Instead, they believe the same resources, energy, time, and strategies intended for building a coalition should be deployed toward revamping the PDP.”
The leaders pointed out that all political parties, including the ruling APC, are dealing with internal conflicts and should not be considered ideal alternatives.
They stressed that the PDP must prioritize reconciliation, party unity, and grassroots mobilization as the 2027 elections draw near.
