In a historic move that signals a new era of global exposure and career advancement for students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, the Career Service Centre on 4th April, 2025 played host to the Country Director of the Canadian Education Council, Dr. Adeniyi John, who was on an official visit to initiate a strategic partnership with the Centre.
Dr. Adeniyi, who described the Career Service Centre as a “trailblazing initiative worthy of global recognition,” commended the vision and impact of the Centre which, he said, has been making waves within and beyond the Nigerian education space. He expressed deep admiration for the Acting Director’s passion, commitment and ingenuity as well as the robust activities and achievements of the Centre, many of which he noted are aligned with the objectives of the Canadian Education Council.
According to the Country Director, the Canadian Education Council is akin to the British Council known for managing global educational assessments such as IELTS. The CEC is responsible for various educational and career development projects, conduct of certification tests, employability tests, internship programs, German language training and testing, international jobs and internship offers.
The meeting, held at the Career Service Centre, witnessed a high-level discussion with the Acting Director, Mr. Abiodun Ogunduboye, and his team on several transformative areas of collaboration. These include:
Establishment of International Career Centres on the campus of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic
Study-Work-Earn Initiative for students to be gainfully employed on remote jobs and earn good income while they study
Remote and Onsite Internship Placements with global companies
Accreditation of the institution’s CBT Centre as an International Employment Licence Test Centre
Access to Research and Innovation Grants
Academic Exchange Programs
Social Intervention Projects targeted at the host community
Strategic Partnership with Amazon for remote job and internship opportunities
Coordination of a Canadian Internship Test for qualifying students
…and other life-changing opportunities tailored to bridge the gap between education and industry
Dr. Adeniyi also applauded the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for initiating and funding the establishment of Career Service Centres across Nigerian tertiary institutions, describing it as a “bold step toward empowering a globally competitive workforce.”
This latest partnership adds to a growing list of strategic collaborations secured by the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Career Service Centre in recent months. These initiatives form part of the Centre’s build-up to its upcoming first-of-its-kind Career Fair, a landmark event projected to reposition the institution as a global brand in the area of career readiness, student innovation, and industry collaboration.
Under the visionary leadership of the Acting Rector, Mr. Adegun Simon Olorunwa, and the ingenuity of the Acting Director of the Career Service Centre, Mr. Abiodun Ogunduboye, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo is fast becoming a national reference point, transforming the narrative of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
